Allow me to introduce you to one of my favourite and most bizarre looking fruits. This is known as Dragon fruit or Pitaya. By looking at the fruit it does seem clear why it got the name dragon fruit, especially with those scale like flaps on it. These originated in Central America but are now available in many more countries including those in Asia. The skin of this particular fruit is very thick, tough and in some ways elastic.
The inside of this fruit is just as interesting as the outside. Don’t worry you don’t need to pick out all of those seeds, they are edible and give the fruit a bit of crunch when you eat it. If you are into exotic fruits you will not want to miss this one. The strange coloured “flesh” you see is what you eat. This fruit has many nutritional benefits, a couple of them are:
- High in antioxidants including phytoalbumins
- Vitamin A
- High in fiber
- High vitamin and mineral content
- Calcium and phosphorous
- Essential fatty acids
This image above from http://www.livelovefruits.com is a lovely “poster” showing the health benefits of dragon fruit. 🙂
There are many ways to prepare and eat dragon fruit. A couple of example are shown in the photos above. A few ideas couple be:
- Fruit skewers or salads
- Ice cream
- Fresh (if you want a healthy snack)
The main point is this fruit is healthy and very interesting to discover. So if you fancy having a try of it, or if you already have, let me know what you thought of it.
